2/3/2020 Canterbury Stakes for Standout

Standout (Exceed And Excel) is ready to take on older horses again in Saturday’s Canterbury Stakes (Gr 1, 1300m) at Randwick with his trainer's only concern the forecast for rain in Sydney leading up to the race. The three-year-old claimed some big scalps in the weight-for-age Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on February 1 including Group 1 winners Alizee (Sepoy) and Kolding (Ocean Park). The colt has yet to race at the elite level but trainer Gerald Ryan believes he can measure up, weather permitting. "If the Canterbury Stakes is wet then he could go to the Galaxy instead," Ryan said. "There are several ways to go. And if he runs in the Canterbury Stakes and runs well, then he has a lot of options. There is the TJ Smith Stakes against older horses or the All Aged Stakes or he could go back to his own age in the Group 2 Arrowfield."
