17/2/2020 Diamond fancy sweats on start

Peter Snowden will be pleased when final Blue Diamond Stakes acceptances are finally taken on Tuesday morning after admitting to an anxious wait as the second favourite Rulership was on the borderline to gain a start.

Snowden, a three-time winner of Victoria’s premier juvenile event, said before Saturday’s Talindert Stakes (1100m) was run at Flemington that Rulership was not certain to make the final field of 16, plus four emergencies, as he was well down the order despite his last start narrow defeat in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m).

"I‘ve got to sweat through this week to make sure he gets a run," Snowden said.

"I didn’t realise he was so far down the list. He’s about 14 or 15 in the order of entry so we’ll see what comes out of the Talindert as to whether we make the field."

As it turned out, a relation to Black Caviar called Ole Kirk won the Talindert and was marked as highly unlikely to back up into the $1.5m Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

But Snowden and his connections are not yet totally out of danger until Monday morning’s deadline for a late entry – at a fee of $55,000 – elapses. He could be back on the cusp if even one juvenile with more prizemoney comes late into the race.

The reason Snowden was feeling so anxious was because he feels he is a genuine chance of training his fourth winner of Victoria’s richest juvenile race after his brave second to Hanseatic in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m).

"There are no knocks on him at all," Snowden said.

"He’s 100 per cent sound. He is in good order. He’s third up and had the perfect preparation.

"It was only his second start ever and it was his first run the Melbourne way and it was at Caulfield.

"I know he led first-up but that’s not the way to ride him.

"He’s definitely a better horse ridden back off them. You can imagine a Blue Diamond field with 16 runners with good speed in it - there always is – and siting back off them, I am sure he’ll make his presence felt."

Snowden has previously won the Blue Diamond Stakes with Sepoy (2011), Earthquake (2014) and Pride Of Dubai (2015).

Play Up has the unbeaten Godolphin colt Hanseatic ($2.30) as favourite ahead of Rulership ($6) prior to the final field being announced on Tuesday after the 9am final acceptances.
