18/10/2019 Victoria Derby-winning sire Rebel Raider dies

Dual-Derby winner and Wyndholm Park sire Rebel Raider (Reset) has died suddenly of a heart attack this week, at just 14 years of age. The Leon Macdonald trained horse was a $101 winner of the VRC Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) in 2008 and went on to take out the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) the following year. He sired three individual stakes winners that were all trained by Macdonald while standing at Wyndholm Park Stud. "He was a genuine quality Group 1 horse who possessed speed and stamina,” Wyndholm Park’s Kim McKellar said. "He was a fantastic stallion for owner breeders and they're the people that make our business and are at the heart of the industry. He achieved outstanding results from some fairly modest mares and definitely had the revered capacity to upgrade his mares and produce a better thoroughbred. His stock were all good, strong types very much like himself. He was the perfect stallion, never had an issue and was just a lovely animal. His loss is a blow to owner breeders in Victoria and to our family and stud."
