Two fillies who contested Saturday’s Australasian Oaks (Gr 1, 2000m) will back up in the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m), but Oaks winner Toffee Tongue (Tavistock) will not be among them. Pinecliff Racing announced yesterday that the Chris Waller-trained Toffee Tongue will spell ahead of a spring campaign. Instead, runner-up Moonlight Maid (Puissance De Lune) and seventh placed Zayydani (Savabeel) will step out on Saturday as they attempt to emulate Qafila (Not A Single Doubt), who ran fourth in the Oaks last year before returning a week later to dominate the Derby. “It has always been in the back of our mind to follow the same path as Qafila last year,” Zayydani’s co-trainer Ben Hayes told “I thought the run of Zayydani was very similar to that of Qafila in the Oaks last year, both fillies were unlucky coming into the straight and both finished strong. She is a filly we’ve always had a high opinion of and I would say her closing sectionals would be one of the best in the race.” Tony McEvoy is also considering backing up luckless tenth Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani).
