13/2/2020 Alizee heads strong Randwick team in G2 Apollo Stakes

Mike Hedge

A new option has emerged for the multiple G1 winner Alizee who is due to head the Godolphin contingent at Saturday’s Randwick meeting – weather permitting.

The condition of the Randwick track may yet influence the decision to run the star mare in the G2 Apollo Stakes, with the alternative option of the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, 22 February still available.

Alizee (Hugh Bowman) resumed earlier this month in the G2 Expressway Stakes in which she didn’t have the best of runs when second to Standout.

“She motored home stylishly in the Expressway behind a very promising three-year-old,” said trainer James Cummings.

“Since then she’s had a very sensible and straightforward build-up.”

For G1 Golden Slipper winner Kiamichi, the only thing likely to stop her running in the G2 Light Fingers Stakes is the cancellation of the meeting.

Kiamichi missed her intended return to racing on Saturday, 1 February due to excessive heat and was then robbed of an opportunity when last week’s Sydney meeting was washed out.

“Both her trials have been encouraging, she won the latest one in good style and she gets the going she prefers,” Cummings said.

“She laid it all on the line last autumn and her preliminaries have been very strong.”

Kiamichi (Rachel King) will be accompanied in the Light Fingers by last spring’s G1 Thousand Guineas winner Flit (Hugh Bowman), who runs at Randwick in preference to the G3 The Vanity in Melbourne.

“She might just be a tougher filly this time around,” Cummings said.

“She’ll certainly be better for this first-up run, but needless to say, she’s going to be even better when she gets up to the mile.”

In the same race, the Anthony Freedman trained Lyre (Nash Rawiller) resumes after a slightly lacklustre spring that followed her brilliant form of this time last year when she won the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes.

“She’s done very well and seems to be back to her old self,” said assistant trainer Sam Freedman.

“She never looked great in the spring, her coat never really came through."

“But she’s looking much better, her trials have been better and we’re looking forward to her showing her two-year-old form.”

Pohutukawa is another filly whose return to racing Cummings is looking forward to in the G3 Triscay Stakes.

“I’d say she should be set to run a forward race first-up after having been given a solid foundation.”

“She’s capable of building into a nice campaign.”

She is joined in the same race by Resin (Rachel King), who Cummings also rates highly.

“She’s strong like a little colt and she’s going to relish the going,” he said.

Yet another hoping to resume racing at the meeting is the former French runner Cascadian (Glen Boss) in the G3 Southern Cross Stakes.

“He might have finally acclimatised,” Cummings said.

“At his last run, he stepped up to G1 company at the mile and he’s won on soft tracks in France.”

The Stakes team is completed by Destination (Josh Parr) in the Listed Lonhro Plate, a race carried over from last week’s abandoned meeting.
