13/2/2020 Godolphin's Australian Guineas prospects on the line at Flemington

Mike Hedge

The highly promising three-year-olds Katalin and Chenier carry Godolphin hopes at Flemington on Saturday – and on the form they’ve shown in their brief careers, they should carry them high.

Having won at her only two starts, Katalin (Craig Williams) has shown herself to be a filly of considerable ability, although trainer James Cummings is conscious of a jump in class in the G3 The Vanity.

“She was deprived of her chance to go through the grades and now gets the opportunity in a G3 after an impressive follow up in much lower class at Newcastle,” he said.

Katalin, nevertheless, won her Newcastle race by almost four lengths, having scraped home in a maiden at Warwick Farm before that.

The filly faces in-form opposition in her first left-handed experience with seven last-start winners engaged.

Chenier’s appearance in the G3 CS Hayes Stakes has been much anticipated by her training team who had planned to run him at last week’s abandoned Sydney meeting.

The colt hasn’t raced since April last year, having suffered a setback, but assistant trainer Sam Freedman believes he has matured well and should run accordingly.

“Even though he won impressively on debut, he’s still raw and learning,” Freedman said.

Chenier (Damien Oliver) is opposed by a classy field, including his stablemate, last spring’s G1 Caulfield Guineas runner-up Alligator Blood and the boom New Zealand gelding Catalyst.

“We’re throwing him in at the deep end a bit, but we’ll be keen to see how he runs,” Freedman said.
