5/3/2020 Gaulois in form for Newcastle G3

A return to form at his latest outing is expected to give Gaulois another opportunity to win his first Group race in Friday’s G3 Newcastle Newmarket.

The winner of two Listed events, Gaulois (Hugh Bowman) was back to his best last start when scoring a dour victory on a heavy track at Warwick Farm.

“He’s burning along really well,” said trainer James Cummings.

“He’ll need to hold his form with topweight in a good field and it would be helpful if the track came up on the soft side.’

“But he’s been a capable horse who rarely performs below par.”

Immediately prior to his Warwick Farm win over 1,600m, Gaulois had turned in good performances in similar class and before that had signed off from his previous preparation with victory in the Listed Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury last August.

In a quality field, the locally-trained Special Reward, who is also a last-start winner, shapes as one of the hardest to beat, along with the Japanese-bred Wolfe, winner of a G3 Coongy Handicap and a contender who is capable of sprinting well while fresh.
In early betting markets, Gaulois is $7, with Special Reward the $3.20 favourite. Check out the latest betting markets.
