1/11/2019 G1 VRC Oaks trial for Flit at Flemington

Mike Hedge

A start in next week’s G1 VRC Oaks awaits the Guineas-winning filly Flit if she comes through Saturday’s G2 Wakeful Stakes at Flemington.

On a Derby Day card that offers a broad selection of Stakes options for the Godolphin team, Flit is joined in the Wakeful by Tisane and the pair is among 13 Godolphin Stakes-race prospects in action on day one of the VRC spring meeting.

While Flit confirmed her class with a last-stride win in the G1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on 12 October, she is venturing into the unknown over the 2000m of Saturday’s race.

But trainer James Cummings is encouraged by the filly’s lead-up work, particularly a gallop on Tuesday with the older mare Savatiano.

“I think for a three-year-old filly to be matching it with a last-start G2 winner like Savatiano who’s well-seasoned and experienced was a credit to her,” Cummings said.

“It’s a good sign for a filly going out to 2000m to be doing that. Saturday’s race will be a good opportunity for her to test herself and see what stamina she has.

Tisane comes from a maiden win to Saturday’s G2, but has shown she should handle the trip.

“We know that she’ll be staying on at the finish by the way she won at Newcastle last time out and she’s out of a filly who beat the boys in a Queensland Derby, so she should stay.”

In the G2 Linlithgow Stakes, the royal blue will be carried by Viridine (Hugh Bowman) who appears to be coming into form at the right time.

“He looks to have good prospects off a bold effort in the Schillaci and a couple of years ago he put in a solid effort in the Coolmore at G1 over this course and distance when he was less than three lengths behind Merchant Navy,” Cummings said

The promising three-year-old colt Hilo continues a productive preparation in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes.

“He comes here off an encouraging run at Caulfield which suggested he deserved a chance in what is historically a very good race.” Cummings said.

“He galloped nicely at Flemington on Tuesday morning, his two wins have been here in Melbourne and he probably didn’t have things all his own way at Caulfield last start.”

The fillies Manicure, Resin and Demerara represent a formidable force in the G3 Begonia Belle Stakes.

“Manicure is flying along and she should be well-suited in another tough mare’s event,” Cummings said.

“Resin brings improved form into this race and was a fraction unlucky not to have filled one of the placings at Caulfield last start and Demerara boxed on solidly in an improved second-up effort that put her back in the mix for a desirable Cup week victory.’
