Oct 12 2020 McNeil booked for leading cup chance
Leading jockey Jye McNeil has wasted little time securing a Caulfield Cup ride, teaming up with Chapada for next Saturday’s Group 1.
McNeil was originally booked to ride Orderofthegarter, a favourite for the race until Saturday’s Herbert Power performance saw connections opt to abandon plans of heading to the Cup.
Instead McNeil will ride the Herbert Power winner for Mike Moroney.
Chapada was impressive when claiming the Herbert Power (2400m) and Moroney has reported the horse has pulled up well from Saturday’s run.
He will carry 50.5kg in the Caufield Cup and is a $21 chance for the race with Sportsbet.
“I am very happy with him. He’s a good horse, though, he should have won a Victorian Derby and a Rosehill Guineas,” Moroney said.
“If you said that about most horses, you’d say they had class.”

Meanwhile, Moroney said he was proud of rising star Buffalo River following his game second in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap on Saturday.
In his first stakes grade race, Buffalo River made the running at Caulfield but couldn’t hold off a fast finishing Mr Quickie.
“He is fine, he came through it well,” Moroney said.
“I thought his first go in a Group 1 was very, very good. He hasn’t even run in a stakes race, let alone a Group 1.
“It’s a pretty good effort for a horse that’s pretty lightly raced. It’s never easy when you have got the racing pattern that he has got.
“Once you get to that top class, it’s never easy.”
Moroney said Buffalo River would head to the Cantala Stakes on Derby Day next.
