1/11/2019 Bivouac and Microphone set to dominate G1 Coolmore Classic

Mike Hedge

The Godolphin colts Bivouac and Microphone go into Saturday’s G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington in a quest for much more than an elite-level victory.

While both have already given their future as stallions a G1 credential, victory in the Coolmore would place them among a select band who have won the race that has become regarded as one of the “stallion-making” events of the Australian turf.

And according to trainer James Cummings, they are primed to join a list that includes the Darley stallions Sepoy and Brazen Beau, along with such other notable stallions as Vain, Century, Zeditave, Zoustar and Star Witness who have all won the Coolmore.

Bivouac (Hugh Bowman), the winner of the G1 Golden Rose two starts back, comes to the Coolmore off a luckless unplaced run in the G1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday, 24 October with Cummings confident he will handle the quick back-up.

“He came through the run better than I did,” Cummings said.

“I wasn’t surprised that he pulled up so well, he really didn’t have the chance to come under full pressure."

“He’s been climbing the walls, so we brought him out on Tuesday for some light exercise. He cantered up the Flemington straight in even time and looked beautiful doing it."

“It’ll be good for him when the pressure goes on Saturday that he’s seen the straight and will be a fraction more familiar."

“The horse is great. It’ll be the race of the day, an absolutely mouth-watering contest.”

One of the main reasons for that will be the presence of Microphone, Godolphin’s best-performed juvenile of last season, who is having the second run of his current preparation on Saturday.

In Microphone’s favour is that the first two of his four wins were on the Flemington straight course.

And in a jockey booking that matches the colt’s form, Cummings has engaged James Doyle for Microphone.

“English jockeys have good straight-track experience and a strong rider like James on Microphone might be a good partnership,” Cummings said.

“Microphone’s got a wonderful straight-track record. He had a long break after the autumn and I think he’s gone ahead since his last run and I think he looked very good in the last furlong of his work at Flemington on Tuesday.”

Among the opposition confronting the Godolphin colts will be the classy filly Libertini and the improving pair Alabama Express and Sartorial Splendor.
