7/8/2018 Freedman Everest stars have Cranbourne trials

A host of spring contenders stepped up their preparations at a Cranbourne barrier trial session in Victoria yesterday. The Anthony Freedman-trained The Everest-bound stablemates Shoals (Fastnet Rock) and Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega) competed in heat four over 800 metres, finishing runner-up and eighth respectively. Four-year-old Shoals, who won the UBET Classic (registered as Robert Sangster Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at her most recent start, finished a nose second to Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice), with Balancing Act (Not A Single Doubt) another three quarters of a length away in third. Freedman’s assistant and son Sam Freedman was delighted with the way Shoals barrier trialled with Jye McNeil in the saddle. "That's probably the best she's trialled for us," Freedman said. "I think she's a fairly lazy trialler and worker and Jye (McNeil) said when the horse came up on the outside of her, she wanted to do it. "She's had a good blow and we'll come back in two weeks' time." Santa Ana Lane won The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) prior to a spell to gain a slot in The Everest and Freedman said the gelding was well below peak fitness yesterday. "He's done exactly what we needed him to do," Freedman said. "He's still quite big and will come back in two weeks' time. Ben (Melham) was really happy with his action and said he's going really well. "We're still mapping out a plan for him but he'll definitely have two runs before the Everest. "They are very fresh and well this morning – it was the first time they've left the farm since being in work so they are very happy to be out here."  Cranbourne barrier trial results and replays
