Moroney's Group 1 hopes warm up

Multiple Group 1-placed Kiwi galloper Savile Row galloped at pace for the first time at Flemington on Tuesday morning six weeks short of his expected return to racing.

"He did his first bit of three-quarter pace this morning and he's going to head to the Bobbie Lewis first-up," trainer Mike Moroney said on Tuesday.

"He's still a stallion so we've got to try and make him into a stallion. He's a lovely horse and he's got Group 1 form."

Savile Row was among New Zealand's best three-year-olds last season, being runner-up in the G1 classic the 2000 Guineas before G1 seconds at weight-for-age in the Levin Classic and Herbie Dyke Stakes.

The Bobbie Lewis is a 1200-metre $200,000 G2 race down the Flemington straight on September 16 and Moroney hopes it will lead to G1 races at Caulfield such as the Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m on October 1) and the Toorak Handicap over 1600m two weeks later.

He said he will then make a call on whether Savile Row stays at 1600m or progresses to 2000m with the Cox Plate still a possibility.

Moroney has also taken over the training of Saracino, who last spring won the G2 Danehill Stakes for Kiwi training partners Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

He said the horse was close to a return.

"He'll probably kick off in an 1100-metre listed race at Caulfield in about three weeks' time," he said.

"He seems to have come up nicely. He's had a couple of gallops up here and he looks terrific."

Another potential spring player for Moroney is Tribal Wisdom, who won the Listed Gosford Guineas in the autumn.

"He might run on the 12th (August) in a 1000-metre race up the straight," the trainer said.

"It might be a little short for him but he trialled really well up the straight and so we'll give him his chance to kick-off there."
