A race of suitable standard and the fitness gained from his past two runs put Moher into the frame for a breakthrough Stakes victory in Saturday’s G3 BRC Sprint at Doomben.
All of Moher’s seven wins to date have been in restricted company, but trainer James Cummings is satisfied the son of Lonhro has enough in his favour to be in the finish here.
“He’s prepared to run the best race of this preparation in the BRC Sprint,” Cummings said.
“He’s certainly going into this race looking as good as we’ve had him.”
Moher’s most recent win was in a strong 1400m event at Flemington last spring when he showed a touch of class to beat the handy Duke Of Brunswick.
He then raced through the early summer without reproducing the form and was sent for a rest.
Moher (Glyn Schofield) ran respectably under a big weight when resuming in a strong race that included his classy stablemate Osborne Bulls. He was then fifth in the Listed Gold Coast Cup on May 5.
Cummings acknowledges that Moher needs to improve to be competitive at G3 level, but is more than hopeful that he can be.
“This will be an interesting throw at the stumps for Moher,” he said.
“He’s getting deeper into his campaign, but still has a bit of freshness in his legs against some horses who have been up for a fair while.”
In that category is the topweight Cellarman who has raced reliably for the past six months winning seven of his past 11 starts, and his stable companion Tougherthantherest who has won his past three.
