8/1/2018 Calculated to target Magic Millions 3yo Guineas

Connections are prepared to gamble on a fast tempo and the step up in distance helping lightly raced colt
Calculated (So You Think) live up to his potential in Saturday’s $2,000,000 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m). The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old, who was scratched from a race at Randwick on
Saturday and was instead floated to the Gold Coast on Saturday night to take his place in the
race for Magic Millions sales graduates.
Star Thoroughbreds’ Denise Martin, who purchased Calculated at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Goodwood Farm draft for $130,000, told said yesterday that Hugh Bowman would ride the colt on Saturday.
Bowman rode Calculated to his maiden victory at Canterbury in July when defeating another talented colt in Brave Song (Your Song) and when runner-up to Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) at Rosehill.
The So You Think (High Chaparral) colt, who contested the Up And Coming Stakes (Gr 3, 1300m) before a spell, was runner-up at Randwick on 16 December and endured a wide run when third over 1200 metres at the same track on 26 December.
“In small fields when you have five and six runners often jockeys are ‘jockeying’ for position and Blake (Shinn) felt that if he pressed on he was going to get caught very wide, so he elected to take the colt back and he found the line really well,” Martin said of Calculated’s most recent start.
“The 1400 metres will suit him ideally and often races at the Gold Coast a number of runners go forward and ensure there is speed in the races, so that should suit him very well.”
In the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Calculated is expected to be one of 16 runners in the capacity field, which is likely to include Vo Rogue Plate (Gr 3, 1350m) winner Pierata (Pierro), Brian Crowley Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Goodfella (Snitzel) and Gold Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) winner Whypeeo (I Am Invincible).
Martin said Bowman had always held Calculated in high regard but his racing manners had let him down.
“Hugh said on radio that he has always had a high opinion of Calculated but that his racing manners had let him down,” she said. “When Blake rode him last start I asked him about the feel of the colt
and he said he obviously has ability, but he is learning to put it all together mentally.”
Gelding Calculated had been briefly considered but Martin believes the colt deserves another campaign to prove he is capable of competing in higher-class races.
“I suppose we considered gelding him for about five minutes, but he has the talent so we will try and keep him as a colt as long as we can provided he can perform,” the syndicator said.
“It hasn’t been discussed with the owners at this stage and if he was unable to progress this preparation
then it might be on the table but at this stage it is not.”
Calculated is a $15 chance in pre-post betting behind the Greg Hickman-trained Pierata ($3) and progressive Kris Lees-trained filly Sasso Corbaro (All Too Hard), who is a $6 chance.
Saturday’s Randwick winner Aqua D’Ivina (Pierro) and Goodfella are listed at $11 along with lightly raced four-year-old Wild Heart (Hinchinbrook).
Victorian-trained three-year-old Bel Sonic (Bel Esprit), who is prepared by Jason Warren at Mornington, is on the same line of betting at $15 with Calculated.
“I certainly think he will get 1600 metres, but nothing has been planned for him yet. For him to progress to a Guineas of any kind he needs to progress in the next month,” Martin said.
Acceptances for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas and the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) will be taken today and the barrier draw held tomorrow morning.
Star Thoroughbreds will also be represented by four-year-old Invincibella (I Am Invincible) in the $1,000,000 Magic Millions Fillies and Mares (1300m) and Balearic (Smart Missile) in the $250,000 Magic
Millions Maiden Plate (1200m).
Invincibella was freshened up after a successful spring campaign in Sydney and Melbourne before running fourth in the Nudgee Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Doomben on 30 December when beaten just over one
length by Don’tbabylon (Reset).
