30/5/2016 Fastnet Rock Colt Tops National Weanling Opener

A Fastnet Rock half brother to former superstar galloper Whobegotyou topped Day One of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast today.

Offered by Murrulla Stud the colt was the subject of intense interest and in the end leading Sydney based bloodstock agent James Harron was able to secure him for $400,000.

"He's extremely well bred," Harron said. "He's obviously by a champion sire in Fastnet Rock."

"It was great that we got the opportunity to buy him and he being offered here. He's a horse that could have made a lot more money as a yearling and I'm delighted to get him," Harron added.

The colt is the tenth living foal for the Japanese bred, French stakes performed Carnegie mare Temple of Peace. She is the dam of four winners headlined by $3.26 million earner Whobegotyou.

New South Wales based nursery Amarina Farm snapped up a couple of exciting prospects including the second top seller on the day - the Not a Single Doubt-Wilde Irish Song colt - from Bell River Thoroughbreds for $280,000.

That colt is the first foal of a Magic Albert winning half sister to Group One AJC Oaks winner Once Were Wild.

One of the day's other top sellers was the I Am Invincible-Radiant Star colt also from the Bell River Thoroughbreds Dispersal and purchased by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock for $250,000.

"I thought he was one of the nicer colts in the sale," Mills said. "He's by a proven sire who's a horse on the up."

"We will re-offer the horse. When you're buying blue chip they stay blue chip. He's a nice horse who can come back here and hopefully make $400,000 or $500,000."

A number of first season sires kicked away the National Weanling Sale with positive results - none more so than Zoustar, a former star galloper who interestingly was sold at the same sale as a weanling.

He had two colts sell for $250,000. The Armanjena colt from Kambula Stud sold to Amarina Farm, while James Bester secured the Sun Maid colt from the Bell View Park Stud Dispersal.

"I loved him. Zoustar is a first crop sire. I thought he was the best of the Zoustars. He was an outstanding walker - there's no question that he's the best mover in this sale"

"A great physique overall and the depth of pedigree behind it," Bester added.

When the last lot sold today the sale gross was over $8.3 million for 152 lots sold at an average price of $54,625. The clearance rate was climbing and is well up on last year's corresponding opening day.

"The National Sale has got away to a good solid start with a very healthy clearance rate of 84 per cent," Cox said noting that 28 lots today sold for $100,000 or more.

"Competition was extremely strong for the desired lots. While the turnover and average are down on last year we expect that to improve tomorrow."
